About Rev. Gilliland

Rev. Martin S Gilliland completed his Master of Divinity and residency at Concordia Seminary, St Louis, Missouri. He is originally from the United Kingdom and served in Her Majesty’s Royal Navy and British Merchant Navy. He has travelled extensively and lived in various countries throughout the world. It was after leaving the Navy that he attended Concordia Seminary and graduated with a Master of Divinity in 1997.  His first parish was in Baltimore, Maryland and it was here after visiting several hospitals/patients that he knew he wanted to be a hospital chaplain. In 2006 he was accepted into the Clinical Pastoral Education residency program, beginning at St Peter hospital, Olympia, WA and completing his residency at EGJH Metairie LA.  It was during his residency that he was introduced to Palliative Care at which he completed a residency. He is a Board-Certified Chaplain through the Association of Professional Chaplains. He is passionate about Palliative Care and has been an instrumental part of Palliative Care at MHS from his first day in 2009.

He is invited to speak and teach about Palliative care and Bioethics at various facilities, organizations, and churches during the year.

He lives with his wife Sandy (RN) and their cat Miska in Picayune. He is an avid reader, enjoys travelling – especially going back to the UK.
